Sustainable Actions

Ostra voluntarily made a commitment to combat climate change by neutralizing its carbon/GHG emissions and is now considered a carbon neutral company. Compensation is made through carbon credits sold by environmental fintech Moss, which guarantees the traceability and transparency of its actions through blockchain technology. The offsets are internationally certified and registered with Verra, the global registration platform that guarantees that the credits actually correspond to less carbon in the atmosphere.

Through the partnership with Moss, Ostra is a contributor to the following projects:

- FSM-RED Project: It is located in the Municipality of Colniza, in the extreme north of Mato Grosso. The project aims to preserve the native forest and its biodiversity, in addition to promoting social development in the area surrounding the farm. It started in 2009 and aims to reduce GHG emissions, avoiding the emission of 26,489,628 tCO2e in 30 years.

- Madre de Dios Project: Located in Tahuamanu, Peru, less than 30 km from the new Interoceanic highway that connects Brazil to Peru. The main difference of the project is the support for local indigenous communities. The objective is to empower them and improve income through sustainable activities. It started in 2009 and aims to reduce GHG emissions, avoiding the emission of 25,072,135 tCO2e in 38 years (2009-2046).

- Agrocortex Project: Manuel Urbano, Pauini and Boca do Acre, between the states of Acre and Amazonas. The project combines environmental conservation, through forest management in the Amazon Forest, social responsibility and economic development of the region. It is a way to protect and manage the forest in a sustainable and lasting way.

- Ituxi Project: The project seeks to maintain sustainable management and avoid deforestation, boosting the training of the local community, which depends on the forest, with the cultivation of açaí and nuts. It began in 2013 and is expected to last 30 years. By 2015, a reduction of 1,181,732 tCO2 in greenhouse gas emissions was estimated.

Ostra reduces the environmental impact of solid waste by increasing the recycling rates of its post-consumer packaging through a partnership with the “EURECICLO” program, which guarantees the recycling of the same number of paper packaging that we place on the market. By adopting the eureciclo solution, Ostra allocates resources to more than 180 sorting centers and invests in the recycling chain. This process meets the guidelines of the National Solid Waste Policy, communicates to consumers the company's engagement with recycling and generates a positive socio-environmental impact. The tracking of this compensation is guaranteed through audits and multiple controls and verifications including the use of blockchain.

Ostra uses 100% recycled cotton bags and bags to package all its products. For each package distributed to the customer, a native tree seedling is planted on the banks of the Paraibuna River. This reforestation is agreed between Mr.Fly (Manufacturer of ecological packaging (has the ABVTEX gold seal that certifies ethical and responsible production) and the city hall of Juiz de Fora/MG, Brazil. From its manufacturing to disposal and reuse, the Eco-friendly fabric reduces carbon, energy and pollution emissions.

Some suppliers certify the reuse of treated water by making intelligent use of water resources and subsequently resuming the process in a continuous, closed-circuit system. Other suppliers use energy from natural gas, reusing the heat and saving up to 30 percent of energy in their processes. Faster Biodegradability is also characteristic of some of our By Birla Cellulose fabrics which are sourced from FSC certified sustainable forests. Our polyester yarn is also sustainable as it is composed of fibers from recycled pet bottles.
